The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform convened to pass the Gerald E. Connolly Esophageal Cancer Awareness Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Ranking Member Gerald E. Connolly and Chairman James Comer. This legislation aims to highlight the impact of esophageal cancer, promote research into preventive treatments, and instruct the Government Accountability Office to assess healthcare spending related to this cancer under the Federal Employee Health Benefits program.
Chairman James Comer expressed his sorrow at Connolly’s passing, stating: “Today we lost a true statesman. Gerry Connolly was a father, a husband, a friend, and a lifelong public servant that dedicated his life to his constituents, his community, and his country.” He emphasized Connolly’s commitment to bipartisanship and shared that they co-sponsored eight bills together during their time on the committee.
Representative Stephen Lynch also paid tribute to Connolly’s legacy: “Ranking Member Gerry Connolly lived his life serving others and making our country a better place. He was a steadfast advocate of the disadvantaged and voiceless.” Lynch acknowledged the dedication of Connolly’s staff who supported him throughout his career.
The act stands as part of efforts in Congress to address one of the fastest-growing cancer diagnoses in America today. It represents ongoing collaboration across party lines aimed at combating esophageal cancer.
