Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Energy Policy, and Regulatory Affairs Chairman Eric Burlison (R-Mo.) and Subcommittee on Health Care and Financial Services Chairman Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) have announced a joint hearing titled “Mandates, Meddling, and Mismanagement: The IRA’s Threat to Energy and Medicine.” This session aims to examine the implications of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) on business taxes, environmental expenditure, and Medicare premiums.
The lawmakers argue that the IRA has been utilized by the Biden Administration to support what they describe as a partisan agenda. They claim it has raised taxes on businesses while funding initiatives associated with the “Green New Deal” and subsidizing green energy purchases for affluent households. Furthermore, they assert that oversight failures have led to wasteful spending within left-leaning organizations.
According to Burlison and Grothman, “The IRA has wasted billions of taxpayer funds to advance the Democrats’ radical climate agenda and restrict Medicare plan choices for Americans who need it most. The IRA’s energy subsidies and Medicare premium hikes could now cost American taxpayers trillions over the next 10 years unless Congress takes action to stop it.”
The hearing is scheduled for May 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. ET in HVC-210 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Witnesses include Mr. Ben Lieberman from the Competitive Enterprise Institute; Dr. Erin Trish from USC Schaeffer Center; and Dr. William McBride from Tax Foundation. The event will be available via livestream.
