House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has announced a hearing to address concerns related to the bankruptcy of 23andMe, Inc. The hearing, titled “Securing Americans’ Genetic Information: Privacy and National Security Concerns Surrounding 23andMe’s Bankruptcy Sale,” will examine the implications for national security and data privacy following the company’s recent financial troubles.
Chairman Comer expressed concern over the security of genetic data belonging to more than 15 million Americans held by 23andMe. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that there are no avenues, legal or illegal, for foreign adversaries or others to exploit this sensitive information. “The House Oversight Committee has a responsibility to examine 23andMe’s bankruptcy proceedings and ensure robust safeguards are in place,” said Comer.
In April, Chairman Comer requested documents related to the bankruptcy filing. In May, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals announced an agreement to acquire assets from 23andMe.
The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET at HVC-210 in the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Witnesses include Anne Wojcicki, Founder and Board Member of 23andMe, Inc., and Joe Selsavage, Interim CEO and Chief Financial Officer of the company. The event will be open to both public attendance and press coverage with a livestream available online.
