House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has commented on Anthony Bernal’s decision to plead the Fifth Amendment during his deposition. Bernal, who serves as First Lady Jill Biden’s chief of staff, chose this legal option amid allegations related to President Biden’s aides taking unauthorized executive actions.
Comer stated, “This week new reporting confirms President Biden’s aides took unauthorized executive actions during his presidency amid his cognitive decline. It’s no surprise that Anthony Bernal is pleading the Fifth Amendment to shield himself from criminal liability.” He further mentioned that Bernal declined to answer questions regarding whether any unelected official or family members performed presidential duties or if he was instructed by Joe Biden to lie about the president’s health.
Comer described the situation as a “historic scandal” and emphasized the need for transparency and accountability. He assured that efforts would continue to uncover the truth and explore options for obtaining necessary answers.
