House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer expressed strong condemnation of recent attacks in Minnesota. He spoke in support of House Resolution 519, which denounces the violent incidents involving state lawmakers and calls for unity against political violence nationwide.
Chairman Comer addressed the House, stating, “On June 14th, a horrific tragedy was inflicted on America and the state of Minnesota.” He recounted how State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were attacked at their home while defending their daughter. Later that day, former Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed by the same assailant.
Comer emphasized that these acts were not random but part of a larger plan targeting public servants. “Such violence has no place in our country—especially political violence,” he asserted.
The resolution reflects a bipartisan stance against threats to elected officials, emphasizing peaceful resolution through debate and democratic processes. Comer highlighted that victims were not just politicians but community members committed to positive change.
He acknowledged law enforcement’s efforts in apprehending the suspect within 40 hours, noting their bravery prevented further harm. “Their courage and professionalism prevented further loss of life,” he stated.
In conclusion, Chairman Comer called for national solidarity to uphold peace and civility: “We condemn these horrific attacks and denounce political violence in all its forms.”
