The Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation, led by Chairwoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), has scheduled a hearing titled “Breach of Trust: Surveillance in Private Spaces.” The session aims to scrutinize the expanding reach and complexity of surveillance technology and assess the risks associated with its misuse concerning personal privacy and security. The committee will also look into potential collaborations with industry stakeholders to create effective privacy protections and accountability frameworks.
Chairwoman Mace emphasized the importance of safeguarding women from being recorded without their consent. She stated, “Women should never be secretly recorded, period. Voyeurism isn’t just creepy, it’s a serious violation of basic human rights and dignity. As surveillance tech gets more advanced, we must ensure women are safe in private spaces, including rental homes and vacation properties. As a survivor of voyeurism, our hearing will dig into this urgent issue. We won’t stop fighting to protect women’s rights and privacy.”
The hearing is set for Tuesday, May 20 at 2:00 PM ET in room 2247 of the Rayburn House Office Building. It will feature testimony from Ms. Laura Chadwick, President and CEO of The Travel Technology Association; Mr. Joseph LaSorsa, Founder and President of LaSorsa and Associates; and Mr. Alan Butler, Executive Director and President of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
The proceedings will be available for viewing via livestream.
