Military affairs subcommittee reviews crash, plans for improved safety

The Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs convened to receive a comprehensive briefing from senior officials of the U.S. Department of Defense concerning a crash involving an Army UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter and American Airlines Flight 5342. This tragic incident near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on January 29, 2025, resulted in the loss of sixty-seven lives.

Following the briefing, Subcommittee Chairman William Timmons and Ranking Member Suhas Subramanyam released a joint statement. The statement confirmed that the U.S. Department of Defense, working with the Federal Aviation Administration, has modified procedures in the vicinity of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to minimize risks during the ongoing investigation.

The Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs expressed its intention to closely observe the investigation’s progress and ensure measures are enhanced to bolster the safety of military operations within the National Capital Region. The investigation and subsequent safety adjustments aim to prevent future occurrences and enhance coordination between military and civilian aviation operations.
