U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate the older adult population continues to rise in the country, while younger age cohorts are gradually declining. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and over increased by 13%, while the population under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past century, the U.S. older adult population grew significantly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 study finds almost half of adults age 65 and up—roughly 28 million people—may need long-term services and support. The same study projects that more than one third could eventually require nursing home care.
