House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has announced a hearing titled “A Hearing with Sanctuary State Governors,” scheduled for June 12, 2025. The governors of Illinois, Minnesota, and New York will testify about their states’ sanctuary policies.
Chairman Comer stated that these policies “only provide sanctuaries for criminal illegal aliens” and criticized former President Biden for what he described as the worst border crisis in U.S. history. He praised President Trump for securing the borders and taking action to deport criminal illegal aliens. Comer accused the sanctuary states of obstructing federal immigration enforcement and called on their governors to explain their priorities.
The hearing is set to take place at 10:00 AM ET in HVC-210 at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center. Witnesses include Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The event will be livestreamed online.
Media representatives must RSVP by June 11 to attend the hearing.
This hearing follows an investigation launched by Chairman Comer in January 2025 into sanctuary jurisdictions’ impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement. In March, the committee held a similar hearing with mayors from Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City. The investigation was expanded in April when Comer requested documents from the governors testifying next week.
