Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the number of older adults nationwide is rising as younger age groups decrease. Between 2020 and 2024, the population of Americans aged 65 and over rose by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has seen significant growth over the last century, increasing from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A study from 2021 estimates that nearly half of Americans in this age bracket—about 28 million people—may eventually need long-term services and support. It also projects that over one-third could require nursing home care in the future.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
