Panthers compete on final day in Florida

Kentucky Wesleyan suffered yet another heartbreaking loss on Saturday, falling 5-4 in eight innings to West Virginia Wesleyan in their opener, before falling 10-2 to the University of Pitt-Johnstown in the finale.

Game One

One inning was nearly enough for the Panthers in their opener. Down 3-0 after five, the Panthers scored four in the sixth inning to go up 4-3. After Sarah Linville reached first on an error, Shelbi Patterson and Megan Matheis each singled to load the bases. Grace Colvin hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, then Allie Dunn hit a 2 RBI double to tie the game. Guinny Garr closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put Wesleyan ahead.

Down to their final out, West Virginia Wesleyan (12-6) took advantage of a Panther error to get on base, then hit two straight singles to tie the game. Wesleyan failed to score in the top of the eighth, and the Bobcats took advantage of the runner placed on second to win the game on their second at bat.

Shelbi Patterson, Megan Matheis, Allie Dunn, and Guinny Garr each recorded a hit in the game, while Allie Dunn led with 2 RBI's. Dunn (5-11) struck out four in the loss.

Game Two

Wesleyan got up early in their second game of the day, going up 1-0 in the first thanks to an Allie Dunn RBI to score Megan Matheis. Pitt-Johnstown (4-6) came alive midway through the game, scoring 10 runs over the third through fifth innings to put the game away. Megan Matheis hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score Immi Mann, but the Mountain Cats held on to win in the sixth.

Megan Matheis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Immi Mann struck out two in the loss.

Freshman Megan Matheis is currenlty on a 16-game hitting streak, and has reached base safely in 25 of their 27 contests.
