Subcommittee on Government Operations Chairman Pete Sessions has announced the first hearing of the 119th Congress. The hearing, titled “Shifting Gears: Moving from Recovery to Prevention of Improper Payments and Fraud,” will continue efforts to address flaws in federal payment systems. This initiative aims to improve data collection, close eligibility loopholes, and prevent further loss of taxpayer dollars.

Chairman Sessions emphasized the importance of preventing improper payments at the outset rather than recovering funds later. He stated that "reducing fraud by identifying and preventing improper payments, particularly in pandemic-era programs, was an important issue championed across party lines during the 118th Congress." He also noted that billions were spent during the Biden Administration under pandemic aid without proper state preparedness.

The hearing is scheduled for March 11, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET in Room 2247 of the Rayburn House Office Building. Witnesses include Kristen Kociolek from the U.S. Government Accountability Office and Ken Dieffenbach from the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee. Additional witnesses are yet to be announced.

Sessions reiterated a commitment to continuing investigations into state-run federal programs and promoting data sharing to ensure effective use of taxpayer money.
