The Subcommittee on Delivering on Government Efficiency, chaired by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, has announced a hearing focused on federal real estate management. The session, titled "Federal Foreclosure: Reducing the Federal Real Estate Portfolio," will examine the government's handling of real property and explore strategies for more efficient management.
Since 2003, the Government Accountability Office's High-Risk List has included federal real property management due to ongoing challenges. The hearing, scheduled for April 8, 2025, at 10:00 AM ET in Washington D.C., will focus on evaluating the federal real estate portfolio's maintenance and operational costs and its financial impact on taxpayers.
Chairwoman Greene has commented on the issue, stating, “The U.S. federal government has been an irresponsible landlord for decades, squandering tens of billions of taxpayer dollars. It cannot accurately track the properties it owns, including their condition, usage, or financial value, and continues to spend billions annually on vacant buildings. Even during the pandemic, when most federal bureaucrats sat at home, the Biden Administration retained nearly all federal properties and leases while spending millions on new office furnishings for empty buildings. President Trump and his administration are taking decisive action to end this egregious waste of taxpayer dollars. The DOGE Subcommittee will work with this administration to right-size the federal government’s property footprint and ensure it acts as a responsible steward of taxpayer-funded real estate.”
Witnesses scheduled for the hearing include David Marroni, Acting Director of Physical Infrastructure at the Government Accountability Office, and John Hart, CEO of Open the Books. The event will be held at the Cohen Building Auditorium in Washington, D.C., and will be available to watch via livestream.
Media interested in attending must RSVP by April 7, 12 PM ET. Identification is required for entry, along with an escort to access the auditorium.
