House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer has announced a markup to consider a resolution and accompanying report to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying lawful subpoenas. The House Judiciary Committee will also hold a markup.

According to Chairman Comer, the investigation into Hunter Biden has produced significant evidence suggesting that President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefitted from his family's financial dealings. The plan was to question Hunter Biden about this evidence, but he chose to defy two lawful subpoenas and read a prepared statement outside of the Capitol, rather than appearing for testimony as required.

In a joint statement, Chairman Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan emphasized that Hunter Biden's refusal to comply with the subpoenas constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney's Office for prosecution. They also made it clear that no special treatment will be given to Hunter Biden because of his last name.

The House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary had issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden for a deposition to be conducted on December 13, 2023. However, on that day, Hunter Biden did not appear for the deposition as required. Instead, he made a public statement on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, accompanied by his attorney and Representative Eric Swalwell. During his statement, he did not take any questions from the media and indicated that he would not comply with the subpoenas.

The Committee on Oversight and Accountability Markup is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at 10:00 am ET in the 2154 Rayburn House Office Building. The markup will be open to the public and press, and will also be livestreamed online.

This development comes after Comer and Jordan previously expressed concern about whether President Biden sought to obstruct his son's cooperation with the House's impeachment inquiry.

The investigation and the efforts to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress continue to unfold.
