House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer expressed approval for the Senate's passage of the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy (RFK) Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act. The legislation is now awaiting the President's signature to become law.
"The Senate’s passage of the D.C. RFK Stadium Campus Revitalization Act is a historic moment for our nation’s capital," stated Chairman Comer. He highlighted the importance of revitalizing the RFK Memorial Stadium site as an economic priority for Washington, D.C., and acknowledged his collaboration with Mayor Muriel Bowser in advancing this bill.
Chairman Comer emphasized that without congressional action, maintaining the decaying land would have continued to burden taxpayers financially. He credited the House Oversight Committee's dedication to taxpayer protection and ensuring prosperity in the capital for both residents and visitors.
The act, introduced by Chairman Comer in July 2023, transfers administrative control over the RFK stadium site from the Secretary of the Interior to Washington, D.C., while retaining federal ownership. This allows for potential stadium redevelopment, commercial and residential projects, and other public uses. Notably, it prohibits using federal taxpayer funds for future stadium redevelopment at this location.
According to a Congressional Budget Office analysis, this legislation will not affect the federal deficit. It passed through various legislative stages before reaching its current status: approval by the House of Representatives in February 2024 and by the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources in November 2024.
