House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) have called for the resignation of United States Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. The call follows what they describe as a "complete inability to explain the historic security failures" that occurred under her leadership during an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13, 2024.
In a joint letter, Comer and Raskin stated: “On July 13, 2024, the United States Secret Service under your leadership failed to protect former President Donald Trump from an assassination attempt that took the life of Corey Comperatore and seriously injured at least two other people.”
The lawmakers further expressed their dissatisfaction with Cheatle's responses at a recent House Committee hearing. “Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures. […] We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people,” they wrote.
During the hearing, Director Cheatle was unable to offer transparency or answer fundamental questions about how her agency failed in protecting President Trump and others involved in the incident.
The full letter addressed to Director Cheatle is available for public viewing.
