Today, Congressman James Comer of Kentucky published an op-ed discussing the achievements of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability during the 118th Congress. As Chairman, Comer emphasized his commitment to addressing waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement within the federal government while holding the Biden-Harris Administration accountable.
Comer stated that upon taking leadership in January 2023, he aimed to restore the committee's role in ensuring government accountability. He reported that since then, "the committee has held over 130 oversight hearings with over 100 government witnesses," issued more than 50 subpoenas, and sent over 600 investigative letters.
He highlighted several key actions taken by the committee. These include exposing President Joe Biden’s alleged involvement in influence peddling schemes and recommending criminal referrals for his son and brother. The committee also introduced a bipartisan bill known as the Presidential Ethics Reform Act to ensure transparency in public offices.
Additionally, Comer noted efforts to address rising drug costs by holding Pharmacy Benefit Managers accountable for anticompetitive tactics. The committee also focused on border policies contributing to what they describe as "the worst border crisis in U.S. history."
Other actions included forcing U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle's resignation following security failures and providing recommendations to prevent waste in pandemic-era unemployment relief programs.
Comer concluded by reiterating his commitment to using oversight powers effectively: "effective oversight works... It works to make the federal government more effective and efficient for you." He stressed ongoing dedication to protecting taxpayer dollars and addressing critical concerns of Americans.
