House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik and Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer are pressing for further information in their investigation into the Biden-Harris administration's handling of a transcript involving President Joe Biden. The inquiry focuses on allegations that the White House released a modified version of Biden's remarks, in which he referred to supporters of former President Trump as "garbage," despite an accurate transcript being submitted by White House stenographers to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
Stefanik and Comer have requested that the White House preserve all related documents and communications concerning the statement and its release. They also demand a corrected transcript with accurate wording. Furthermore, they call for the immediate availability of the top supervisor from the White House Stenography Office for a briefing.
In their communication to White House Counsel Edward Siskel, Stefanik and Comer stated: “The White House cannot simply rewrite President Biden’s rhetoric. In this case, it appears the White House is doing so to safeguard Vice President Harris’s presidential campaign.” They expressed concerns over what they described as "a breach of protocol" between the Stenography and Press Offices after conferring with President Biden.
They added: “We are concerned with the latest reporting of the White House’s apparent political decision to protect the Biden-Harris Administration, instead of following longstanding and proper protocols.”
The lawmakers questioned whether altering or manipulating transcripts could potentially violate federal law, including provisions within the Presidential Records Act of 1978.
