House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer expressed approval following the House of Representatives' passage of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Reauthorization Act of 2024, known as H.R. 9598. This legislation aims to equip federal agencies with the necessary tools to address drug trafficking, especially at the southwest border.
"Today, the House of Representatives took action to address the drug crisis claiming too many lives across our nation," stated Chairman Comer. He emphasized the importance of the ONDCP in combating fentanyl and other drugs affecting communities in the U.S., urging swift Senate action on this bill for presidential approval.
The bill includes several key provisions: reauthorizing programs such as High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) and Drug-Free Communities (DFC) through FY 2031; incorporating elements from other acts like HIDTA Reauthorization Act and Caribbean Border Counternarcotics Strategy Act; and requiring studies on opioid overdose reversal agents. It also mandates coordination among various departments to ensure resources are allocated effectively against drug traffickers.
The original cosponsors include Representatives Jamie Raskin, John Duarte, Jerrold Nadler, Jenniffer González-Colón, and Stacey Plaskett.
