House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has announced an upcoming hearing titled "Rightsizing Government." The hearing is scheduled for February 5, 2025, and will focus on the federal government's growth in size and complexity. The committee aims to address issues such as excess costs and inefficiencies within federal services.
The hearing will consider reform pathways by examining the streamlined structure of Iowa's state government under Governor Kim Reynolds' legislation. "Hardworking taxpayers across the country expect their government to work efficiently and effectively, but the federal bureaucracy has ballooned to an unmanageable size," stated Chairman Comer. He emphasized that many federally funded programs are bloated and vulnerable to waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement.
Chairman Comer also mentioned that the House Oversight Committee has jurisdiction over executive branch reorganization. He expressed readiness to collaborate with President Trump's Department of Government Efficiency to reassess the federal bureaucracy's scope and structure. "The Committee is determined to facilitate government reforms that safeguard taxpayer funds while making the federal government more efficient and effective for all Americans," he added.
The hearing will take place at HVC-210 at 10:00 a.m. ET. Witnesses include Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa and Thomas A. Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste. The event will be open to both the public and press, with a livestream available online.
