House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer delivered remarks at a committee hearing titled "Rightsizing Government." In his statement, Comer highlighted President Donald Trump's commitment to reducing federal inefficiency and eliminating waste. He stated that the administration's efforts have faced criticism from Democrats, who have raised concerns about potential overreach.

Comer noted the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, as part of Trump's strategy to audit and streamline government operations. He pointed out bipartisan acknowledgment of federal inefficiency, with both parties historically battling against waste, fraud, and abuse.

"President Trump promised he would eliminate Washington waste and reform the unchecked federal bureaucracy. And he is delivering on his promise made to the American people," said Comer.

He emphasized that recent claims from Democrats about potential constitutional crises are exaggerated. "This kind of theatrical rhetoric is exactly what the American people rejected in November," Comer remarked.

The chairman stressed that innovation in government can be disruptive but necessary for change. The committee aims to work alongside DOGE to improve efficiency and accountability within federal agencies.

A new subcommittee, chaired by Marjorie Taylor Green, has been established to focus on collaboration with DOGE. However, all subcommittees are expected to contribute to these efforts.

Comer questioned whether anyone believes the current federal government operates efficiently, highlighting its significant expansion over time. He cited Tom Schatz of Citizens Against Government Waste regarding Congress's tendency to create new programs in response to problems without considering existing similar activities.

Comer referenced Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds' state reorganization as a model for potential federal reforms. He noted that while some reorganizations can be executed under existing law, others require legislative changes traditionally initiated by presidential proposals.

In closing, Comer expressed interest in learning from witnesses during the hearing about effective reform strategies before yielding the floor to Ranking Member Connolly for his opening statement.
