House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer has announced the creation of a new task force aimed at examining the declassification of federal secrets. The task force, named the “Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets,” will be led by Representative Anna Paulina Luna. This initiative follows an executive order by President Trump focused on the declassification of records related to significant historical events.
Chairman Comer emphasized the need for transparency, stating, "For too long, the federal government has kept information of public interest classified and the American people are demanding greater transparency. This secrecy has sowed distrust in our institutions."
Representative Luna expressed her commitment to leading this effort, saying, "The federal government has been hiding information from Americans for decades. We have spent years seeking information on the assassinations of President Kennedy, Senator Kennedy, Reverend King, and other government secrets without success."
The task force is set to operate for six months according to Committee Rules. It will address various issues including unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs), the Epstein client list, COVID-19 origins, and files related to 9/11.
Comer and Luna have initiated their efforts by sending 11 letters concerning declassification matters. The task force's members will be announced later.
President Trump's executive order requires specific government officials to prepare plans for releasing records about these historical assassinations within set timeframes.
