Muhlenberg County School District welcomed 4,692 students in 2023-24 school year

There were 4,692 students enrolled in Muhlenberg County School District in the 2023-24 school year, 1.6% less than the previous year, according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2023-24 school year, 52.8% of them were boys, and 47.2% were girls.

Data also showed that most of the students were white, making up 89.3% of the Muhlenberg County School District's total enrollment.

Muhlenberg County School District roughly covers nine schools within Muhlenberg County and has a main office in Powderly.

Among those schools, Muhlenberg County High School recorded the highest enrollment of 1,200 students in the 2023-24 school year.

Kentucky is in the midst of a statewide teacher shortage as turnover rates spiked to 10.9% in 2023, up from an 8.9% nine-year average. This issue is more prominent in schools with more low-income and minority students.

Between 2019 and 2023, there was an increase of 260% in the number of available teaching posts in Kentucky schools. This often leads to larger class sizes, combining programs, and retaining staff despite potential negative impacts on teacher working conditions.
