Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation Chairwoman Nancy Mace is advancing an investigation into the Biden-Harris Administration's alleged attempts to influence social media companies to censor content. Mace had initially sent a letter in September 2024 requesting information from President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, but has yet to receive the requested documents.
In a follow-up communication, Chairwoman Mace emphasized her demand for all records of communication between the White House, social media firms, and any private sector entities related to online speech suppression efforts. She indicated that further measures might be taken if the White House continues its non-compliance.
“The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is continuing its oversight of information suppression campaigns in which the Administration may be currently engaged," wrote Chairwoman Mace. "More than a month past that deadline, the Committee has received no substantive response.”
The administration's approach to managing social media content has been previously acknowledged. In July 2021, former Press Secretary Jen Psaki noted during a press briefing that they were “flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation.” Psaki also mentioned regular contact with social media platforms regarding certain types of information.
Mace expressed urgency in her recent correspondence: “If you continue to fail to produce the requested documents by October 31, 2024, the Committee will consider additional measures.”
