House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer has released partial disclosures from a whistleblower after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) did not comply with a subpoena. The subpoena requested documents related to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz's alleged connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Comer shared internal DHS communications obtained through a whistleblower, highlighting concerns among DHS officials about the CCP targeting politicians like Governor Walz.
Chairman Comer stated, "Because of DHS’s lack of compliance with the Committee’s legal subpoena and unwillingness to cooperate in good faith, the Committee is releasing a small portion of the Department’s internal communications it received from a whistleblower." He added that these communications show discussions among DHS officials regarding CCP influence operations targeting Governor Walz.
The Oversight Committee has been investigating federal agencies' efforts against CCP infiltration aimed at undermining U.S. integrity. During briefings with over twenty federal agencies, they discovered attempts by the CCP to influence subnational leaders, including state governors. In August, Comer initiated an investigation into Governor Walz following reports of his ties to CCP entities and officials. Despite a subpoena issued on September 30, 2024, DHS has not responded.
Comer further mentioned that information from a whistleblower suggests involvement from DHS's Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in matters related to the CCP and Governor Walz. He expressed concern over DHS's refusal to comply with Congress's request for information on this critical issue: "DHS’s unwillingness to cooperate with a Congressional subpoena seeking information on this subject of importance to the American people raises more questions."
